Dunedin Connolly's was founded by Tony Haughey in 1988 taking the name Dunedin, which is the Gaelic translation of Edinburgh and Connolly's, named after James Connolly, famous Irish politician and patriot who was born in Edinburgh.

Originally the club was formed in order to affiliate a team to the Scotland GAA County Board comprising of first and second generation local Irish immigrants from a working class background. The early teams trained at St. Attracta’s Primary school in Broomhouse on the outskirts of Edinburgh and were coached by Neil Doherty.

However, the emergence of the British University championship over 10 years ago, which included a team from Heriot Watt University and more lately Napier University & Edinburgh University, provided a very strong platform for the current team.

In 1993 Sean Gavaghan (now Chairman) established the Heriot Watt University side, which has since gone on to acquit itself very well at third level education level Gaelic football and defeated Dundee to take the Scottish title in 1994. Napier University also formed a University team in 2004 winning the Scottish League and Championship in both 2004 and 2005 and have also got to the semi finals of the British championship twice where they were unlucky to lose to the eventual winners on both occasions. In 2005 Edinburgh University also formed their own football team and reached the final of the Scottish Championship in their first year eventually losing to a strong Napier side. Both University teams have become an important feeder unit for Dunedin Connolly's.

Duddingston Rugby Club became the Connolly's base in 1998 and since their early days at Attracta’s the club has gone from strength to strength, now boasting a panel of more than 30 players. A ladies team has also been recently formed and they recently won the Scottish sevens Competition.

Dunedin Connolly’s completed a three in a row of Scottish Championships in 2005 when overcoming Glasgow Gaels by 0-11 to 1-4. This was a feat that was never achieved before in Scottish football and everybody that was involved is very proud of their efforts. Connolly’s have also reached 2 British Intermediate Championship finals (2004 &2005) but unfortunately were narrowly beaten in both. The efforts and contributions of the 3-in-a-row winning Manager Tomas Scullion will no doubt go down in club folklore. He handed over the reigns the reins in 2006 after guiding the club through it most successful period.

Every Year Dunedin Connollys compete in 6 competitions here in Scotland. The Davitt shield, The Pearse Cup, The Morcum Cup, The Sevens Competition, The League and The Championship. We compete against 4 other teams in these competitions, Glasgow Gaels of Paisley in Glasgow, Tir Conaill Harps of central Glasgow Sands Mc Swinneys of Coatbridge and Dundee Dhalrida of Dundee.

The ladies also compete in 3 Competitions – The League, The Sevens and The Championship. They compete against 2 other ladies teams – Glasgow Gaels and Tir Conaill Harps. We won the sevens tournament in 2006 and got to the final of the Scottish Championship.

With success comes substantial growth and this is certainly true for Dunedin. We now boast in the region of 70 Members, both Male & Female. This is still small in relation to some of the bigger clubs but we are growing all the time and the club is always welcoming new members, young and old, from any background.

Recently the club has become more involved in making the Edinburgh public aware of the fact that there is a Gaelic Football team in their midst and the club is making annual appearances in the Edinburgh Marathon to help raise funds for Charity Organisations.

Away from football Dunedin Connolly’s have a very healthy social club and if its just a bit of craic with a few Irish & Scottish Lads and Lasses you're looking for, then you can’t go to far wrong than become a member of this wonderful club in this great city.
